Episode 1: Why story comes first
Most people don't listen to podcasts to buy jewellery. I get that. Why would you listen to a podcast about a product?
But here's the thing. Jewellery, especially meaningful pieces like engagement rings, shouldn't just be a product.
Jewellery should be a conversation.
I've heard it too many times - when a customer comes in and says, "Oh, it was beautiful, but it just didn't feel like me".
This podcast is here to change that.
Maybe you're the thoughtful partner quietly researching. The couple who wants something personal but doesn't know where to start, or the sentimental rebel holding onto heirloom gems that deserve more than a stock standard ring.
You are who this podcast is for, and today I'm going to talk about why Story First isn't just the name of the podcast, it's the approach that I take with every single piece I design.
When you design jewellery the traditional way, it often starts with a question. "What size diamond do you want?"
Or "Do you want a solitaire or a three stone ring?"
It feels a bit pick and stick to me, and I guess that's why jewellery was never really my thing.
Shocking, right? A jeweller who doesn't like jewellery.
But when we take a Story First approach, the questions are different. It might be, "how did you two meet?"
"What do you love the most about each other?"
We take a Story First approach because that's how you design something you'll still love 10, 20, 50 years from now.
And when it's handed down to the next generation, they're not going to say this: "This is an 18ct gold ring with a sapphire".
They're going to say, "this sapphire was chosen because it's the exact mix of colours in my mum's eyes". That's the story that'll continue.
When you design from story, the design consult is a conversation. This is where we tease out the personal moments that make you smile.
Like the ring I designed for a stellar astronomer. It was inspired by a constellation, conveniently called the Jewel Box Star Cluster.
Or the couple who met and bonded over their love of books. During our consult, they casually showed me their colour coded bookshelves.
That was a split second moment that ended up becoming the foundation for both of their rings.
When you lead with meaning the overwhelm disappears, you're not choosing from 50 stones and 20 different design configurations. You're choosing, like Tayla and Emily, a love story told in colour. They're both avid readers and so we created them two rings in the same genre, but written like chapters from their own individual stories.
Of course, the sapphires and diamonds were colour coded just like their bookshelves.
For Alex and Ella, the stellar astronomer, it was a stunning ring, inspired by stars and space and light. The centerpiece was a moissanite, a gemstone that in its natural form was first discovered on a meteor. Ella now wears her own miniature galaxy with salt and pepper diamonds and clusters of colour changing gems.
I've been designing jewellery for more than a decade, and here's what I know. The people who fall the most deeply in love with their pieces aren't the ones who came in with the perfect plan.
They're the ones who shared their story and asked questions and let the process become part of the meaning in their jewellery.
You are part of every important moment from choosing your gemstone to shaping the design and making the small, meaningful decisions that bring it all to life.
So when you open that box for the first time, you're not just holding a beautiful piece of jewellery. You're holding a ring that couldn't have been made for anyone else.
That's why we take a Story First approach, and once you've experienced it, you won't want to design any other way.
If you want to have a chat about a custom design, book a Story First design session. By the end of it, you'll have a clear idea what your personalised storytelling idea looks like.
This is Story First, a podcast designed to help you do jewellery, life and love your way.
