What is a radiant cut gemstone?

A radiant cut gem combines the sparkle of a round brilliant cut with the contemporary elegance of an emerald cut. Best of both worlds? Yes please!

Its rectangular or square shape features trimmed corners and facets that maximise brilliance. This cut is ideal for those who want to steal the spotlight with bling that’s anything but bland.

The hidden halo engagement ring

Hidden halos are a jewellery designer’s secret weapon for adding understated brilliance. In a standard halo setting, small gemstones create a dramatic border that amplifies the perceived size of the centre gem.

A hidden halo takes a subtler approach. Instead of surrounding the main stone, tiny gems (often diamonds) are placed on the support rail under the gem.

The result? An elegant solitaire look with an unexpected touch of sparkle.

As designers and makers of custom, high quality jewellery, we're all about function and form. The hidden halo is not just a stunning design element. It also offers essential structural support for the main stone.

The engagement ring below, custom made for one of our Sydney-based jewellery lovers, is a rare find because it ticks all the boxes - even the most elusive ones. It was crafted to house a stunning 3.03ct natural diamond, while incorporating a number of important features.

Why everyone wants this radiant cut engagement ring

  • Low profile without compromise: Designed for durability and longevity, the radiant cut diamond is set as low as possible above the finger. Low profile settings are an excellent choice for larger stones to minimise snagging and wear and tear.
  • Flush-fit wedding band: This ring is designed to sit snugly against a straight wedding band, with no gaps, a rare feature for rings with low profile settings. In most designs, the setting is lifted to accommodate a straight band, resulting in a higher profile setting. Thanks to some careful structural refinements, we opened up the base of the ring to create the elusive 'floating diamond' effect, without compromising durability.
  • Secure double claws: Two claws on each corner (rather than the usual single claw) ensures the larger diamond is firmly anchored, providing stability and, most importantly, peace of mind.
  • Hidden bling: The subtle halo offers secret sparkle, adding a delightfully unique detail to an already statement engagement ring. It’s ideal for those torn between the timeless elegance of a solitaire and the brilliance of a diamond-studded halo.
  • Timeless meets trendy: We adore a good radiant cut gemstone. It strikes the perfect balance between geometry and brilliance - exactly the kind of sophisticated statement we love to see in an engagement ring.

Let's not forget the cushion cut engagement ring (and other gemstone shapes stealing the limelight)

We're not one for trends. But we've got to admit that the east-west, Georgian-style, cushion-cut engagement ring that Zendaya flashed in the new year has reignited interest in less conventional diamond shapes.

While we're still seeing increased interest for geometric and radiant cuts gemstones, cushion cuts are undoubtedly poised for a resurgence in 2025. In fact, the sharp-eyed among you might notice that the diamond in the ring above is technically a straight-sided cushion cut in a radiant-style setting.

Cushion cuts have a romantic, vintage appeal and a signature pillow-like shape. Often cut in a pattern similar to round brilliant cut diamonds, they can also feature stepped facets for a more understated, elegant effect.

For those seeking something different, the antique-style 'old mine cut' cushion features larger, hand-cut facets that come alive under candlelight. It’s a nod to a bygone era, perfect for those who appreciate timeless design with a touch of history.

While the cushion cut engagement ring gears up for a well-deserved moment, here are some other geometric alternatives that are making waves.

  • Emerald cut: Renowned for their understated glamour, emerald cut diamonds and gemstones step away from the ‘disco ball’ sparkle of the traditional brilliant cut, creating a sleek, hall-of-mirrors effect with their elongated facets.
  • Asscher cut: Asschers are the square-shaped relative of the emerald cut. Perfect for lovers of symmetry, they feature broad, rectangular facets that exude vintage charm and art deco vibes.
  • Hexagon cut: With its sharp lines and distinctive geometry, the hexagon cut is a true standout. It's one of the more uncommon gemstone shapes, making it a compelling choice for those who value individuality in their jewellery.
