How this on-stage proposal absolutely stole the show

How this on-stage proposal absolutely stole the show

Allie, vocalist of Singaporean band, Too Much Drama, was on stage at live music venue, Switch by Timbre.

Singing had always been her passion. It wasn’t a conventional career choice – even less so in conservative Singapore – but Allie wasn’t a conventional girl. With a shaved head, septum piercing and ink peeking out from under the leg of her shorts, she wasn’t one to let other people’s opinions get in her way.

They were about halfway through the set. And that’s when it all went wrong.

Out of nowhere, lead vocalist Ben started going completely off script.

“So this song represents both of them,” he said. “I would like to take this chance to sing this song for them. And I’m also very glad to be part of their journey.”

That wasn’t right, Allie thought, as the band started to play the intro of what sounded like Say You Won’t Let Go by James Arthur.

Great song. But why would Ben choose a slow tune when the mood up to this point had been pretty energetic?

She shuffled awkwardly, not sure what to do next. It was a song that her and her partner, Edys, loved. A song that she had gotten the band to learn because of him.

“I met you in the dark, you lit me up. You made me feel as though I was enough…” the lyrics went.

“I wanna stay with you until we’re grey and old. Just say you won’t let go…”

When it ended, Allie had no idea what to do next. Go back to the set like nothing had happened?

Seconds of silence.

The TV turned on. Then blacked out.

Oh crap, she thought. Another hiccup in the system!

Allie waved to the band, indicating for them to continue to the next song.

Suddenly in another unexpected twist, the opening sequence of one of her favourite songs, Best Day of my Life by American Authors started playing on the screen.

“Hey Edys, hey Allie,” said the familiar jeweller’s face on the TV. “I hope you enjoy this video of your ring coming to life. It was such a pleasure making it for you!”

“And Allie, I hope you say yes!”

The video showed range of raw materials being turned into a handcrafted rose gold, sapphire and diamond engagement ring.

Her jaw dropped.

From then on, it was all a blur.

Edys walked onto the stage, bouquet of flowers in hand.

“I got Ben to sing Say You Won’t Let Go by James Arthur because this song is about falling in love with someone and wanting to grow old with them,” he said.

“Knowing you has been the best thing that has ever happened to me.”

“I realised that you were the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with because with you everything is real and transparent. We share the same direction and views on life, and most importantly you challenge me mentally and inspire me to be a better version of myself.”

“Now…it’s time to make it official.”

To cheers from the crowd, he knelt and said, “Alicia Soh, will you marry me?”

And she – of course – said yes!

How it all began…

In addition to living in the same neighbourhood in Singapore as kids, Allie has been a customer of mine from way back in the beginning. She sent Edys my way when they started discussing the next stage of their relationship, but didn’t expect that this would be where, when and how it happened!

“The song started playing and I thought maybe there was a proposal that I didn’t know about,” she said.

“Say You Won’t Let Go is a very special song for us. We love that song and every word means a lot to us.”

“When the video came on screen, I thought oh! Someone’s proposing and bought from you! Then once you appeared and spoke, I’m like oh man dat me! Everything else was a blank from then on. I can’t describe it very well. It was definitely an amazing blank.”

And what does Allie think of the ring?

“Its gorgeous,” Allie said. “I’m clumsy and fumble everywhere and this ring, like my fiancé, puts up with my crap. It’s REALLY comfortable and when I play the keyboard at shows, it doesn’t get in the way like some rings do.”

“Sincerely, from the bottom of my heart, I could not imagine a more perfect ring.”
